Re
Seat 3 DEC 03
Goverment House,
Hongkong, 29th. October, 1903.
sir.
СА 14959
02 with reference to your predecessor's Des-
patch No. 161 of the 6th. of June, 1902, I have the honour to
state that it having been found necessary to give 3 months
notice to Mr. R. P. Sharp, under clause 6 of his agreement
with the Crown Agents, a successor is required and I enclose
the usual particulars of the office in duplicate.
2.
I shall be glad if you will request the
Crown Agents to select a successor who should not leave for
Hongkong until after January when half-salary becomes available.
The Director of Public Works states that
3.
the person selected should be an Architect's Assistant and
suggests that the Crown Agents should advertise the appoint-
ment in The Builder* and *The Building News'. The Director
of Public Works also points out that for Assistant Engineers
young men of from 23 to 27 years of age are usually appointed.
In the only two cases where older men have been selected Mr.
Mossop and Mr. Sharp are the two instances the candidates
have shewn lack of ability and have not given satisfaction.
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE
COLONIES.
